Trying to be delicate here but the question is:

How green and clean is your toilet?

Well, at our house, we actually can claim our toilet is exceptionally green and clean since we installed the American Standard VorMax model toilet in my husband’s water closet, which is truly the best test ever! Like I said, trying to be delicate here, but facts are facts.

 

WATER IS THE NEW OIL

In case you have not heard, we are facing a water crisis like never before in our country. Americans often believe that water availability is only an issue “for those people” but not us. If we do not grasp what is upon us, we will be “those people.”

Let me share with you how our family knows first hand what happens when water rationing occurs. We lived in Walnut Creek, California in the late 70’s and early 80’s. We had three small children under the age of 5 when water rationing was mandated. We had a mere 580 gallons of water a day for over a year.

Do you have any idea of what this means to your daily life? Well, we could not run our dishwasher, do laundry, bathe our toddlers or us, and heaven forbid, water outside on the same day or even in the same week.

Now, remember the Mama and the Papa’s song that says, “It never rains in California?” It does not rain from spring to fall! So, like most, we all let our lawn go but tried our best to save our shrubs and trees. Do you know what grey water is? It is the rinse water from your washing machine which we dare not waste.

Okay, not even close to being delicate here, but we all went by the motto,

If it’s yellow, let it mellow.
If it’s brown, flush it down.

Yes, totally our life at that time!

And then, guess what happened to us? Every year we went to LA to visit our very close friends with our three kids. We were truly against seeing Southern Californians watering their lawns and seeing the run-off going into the street, washing their cars, and on and on. We yelled emotionally, that is our water from Northern California!

But, so like Americans today, until you do not have it, it is meaningless.

Now, all of you who know me, I am a half-full water glass kind of person.

However, in the Midwest, we have experienced a three-year drought. We thought that now that the rains relieved our drought status, we are evidently down again in inches for the year 2015. My design clients are asking for appliances and fixtures to position them to be proactive in water conversation.
